About the role

Yump is looking for a senior developer who combines deep technical expertise with a strong ability to own and drive development planning, delivery, and process. This person will work alongside the Lead Architect and a Backend Developer as a technical peer, contributing high-quality code across a varied stack. While also being the person responsible for roadmaps, planning, task management, progress tracking, and communicating timelines and status to product management and stakeholders.

The split is roughly 70/30 development vs. planning, but the planning side carries real weight: this person will be the one stakeholders turn to for delivery estimates, project status, and prioritization input. It's not a Project Manager role bolted onto a developer — it's a Senior Engineer who genuinely enjoys and excels at the structured, communicative side of shipping software.

Technical environment

Yump's platform spans a broad technical landscape, with a backend built primarily in C# (.NET) and Python, a microservice-based architecture, and MongoDB as the primary database. Infrastructure is hosted on Azure with a modern DevOps setup including containerized deployments and GitOps. The platform also includes AI-powered services and embedded C firmware for physical hardware devices.

What we expect technically

This person should be a strong .NET/C# developer, comfortable working in both established codebases and modern containerized microservices. Python experience is valuable. Beyond writing code, you need solid fundamentals in object-oriented design, architecture, code reusability, and the judgment to make good decisions about how systems are structured and how they communicate.

The Lead Architect retains final say on architecture and major technical decisions, but this person should be able to engage in those discussions as a peer — proposing, challenging, and contributing meaningfully, not just executing.

What we expect on the planning/process side

This is not a token responsibility. Yump need someone who can:

• Define and maintain a development process that works for a small, fast-moving team — choosing and adapting the right methodology rather than forcing a textbook framework
• Break down projects into well-defined tasks, ensure they're clearly scoped, and keep the team aligned on priorities
• Maintain and communicate development roadmaps to product management and stakeholders
• Provide realistic estimates and track progress transparently
• Coordinate across a small, distributed team with varying focuses (backend, frontend, styling, firmware), including an external hardware engineer

AI-assisted development mindset

This is important. Yump has adopted AI-assisted development (primarily Claude) across the company and is investing heavily in this direction. They are not talking about casual copilot-style autocomplete or "vibe coding" — they are building complex, multi-service systems using a spec-driven approach, including reusable AI skills and specialized agents, style guides, linting rules, and structured review processes.

The ideal candidate:

• Has already been using AI development tools (Claude, Cursor, Copilot, or similar) and sees the transformative potential — it would be a red flag if they haven't explored this at all
• Understands that effective AI-assisted development of complex systems requires more planning and structure, not less — clear specs, well-defined requirements, design-by-contract thinking, thorough code review
• Can articulate requirements and architectural intent clearly in writing, since this is now a core development skill
• Has the seniority to critically evaluate and review AI-generated code, architecture, tests, and documentation — not just accept output uncritically

In many ways, the planning skills and the AI-development skills we need are two sides of the same coin: structured thinking, clear communication, and the ability to break complex problems into well-defined pieces.
